Ski vacations Stelvio in the Vinschgau Valley – Idyllic Mountain Village in a Natural Paradise!

Stelvio

The natural beauty of the Ortler region has been well-known for quite some time, even dating back to 1935 when Italy's King Viktor Emanuell III donned the region the "National Park Stilfser Joch." In the heart of this nature-lover's paradise lies the municipality of Stelvio (German: "Stilfs"), with around 1,200 residents living along the lower half of the dominant mountain of South Tyrol, the King Ortler. The 3,905 m giant belongs to the Ortler-Cevedale group, of which is composed of several peaks between 3,500 and 4,000 m altitude and a few great ski areas. The main resort of the municipality is the village of Stelvio, of which is cosied up against the steep slopes of the Munwarter and Chavalatsch mountains. The typical build of a romantically dispersed village involves many small alleyways between the dense rows of houses, providing you with a truly extraordinary atmosphere.

Stelvio can be reached via the well-known Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio). The 2,758 m high mountain pass helps remind you just how remote and untouched this natural paradise is. The pass runs over 48 (sometimes small) turns into the Lombardy region.

The municipality of Stelvio is also a place of fame. For example, its the home of the ski legend Gustav Thöni, of whom is still able to be seen today meeting up with visitors while skiing. The most famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner treasures the region so much as to let his yaks graze the mountain pastures, as well as open up his Messner Mountain Museum. A visit to see the impressive animals is worth a trip for families, whereas a visit to the "Ortles" exhibit is designed for art appreciators.

Ortles Region

Amidst the national park of Stilfserjoch, framed by 14 peaks, each above an altitude of 3,000, lies the Ortler region. Its named after the 3,905 m high, most well-known glacier in the eastern Alps. The grandiose landscape surrounding the Ortler captivates both visitors of winter and summer. Around the Ortler, you can experience pure skiing fun from November - May, including the impressive panoramic view of the Ortler, Cevedale, and the Königsspitze.
