Ski vacations France

France - A skiing nation with plenty of superlatives! The Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps, the Vanoise Express the biggest and fastest double floored cable car in the world, and Les 3 Vallées claims to be the largest ski area in the world. Whether you want to ski the glacier in Les 2 Alpes, on the Olympic slopes of Chamrousse, the interconnected ski areas in the region Les Sybelles or in the small but not any less nice ski area as in Valfréjus - in France, you can find whatever you're looking for.

Why book ski holidays in France?

What are the main reasons for spending a skiing holiday in France? This beautiful country attracts many tourists every year, and there are many reasons for this. Is it because of its cultural and scenic diversity, or perhaps its culinary specialities? At least one of these aspects should be reason enough to visit France! The country offers a unique selection of delicious food and world-famous wines.
Even though France offers a seemingly endless selection of delicacies, this is not the only reason why you should visit the country in winter. The spectacular skiing and snowboarding conditions are another! The French ski regions are among the largest and highest in the world. The French Alps are not only beautiful and snow-sure, but also offer perfectly groomed slopes and excellent deep snow conditions at high altitudes. Imagine: the perfect descent awaits you, the snow glistens in the sun and the Mont Blanc massif towers majestically before you. What more could you want?

France also offers unique day trips and interesting sights. One city you shouldn't miss is Grenoble, where the Winter Olympics were held in 1968. The city is located in the middle of the French Alps and offers almost everything your heart desires: museums, a citadel with a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding mountains. Another bonus: a winter holiday in France is usually quite inexpensive!

Where can you go skiing in France?

With so many ski resorts and sporting activities on offer, choosing the right ski resort is no easy task. The largest ski resorts are located in Savoy. The Vanoise massif in the southern Alps of Savoy is home to the famous ski resorts of La Plagne, Val Thorens, Tignes and Valmeinier. One day, this region will probably grow to become the largest ski region in the world. The Les 3 Vallées ski region offers over 600 kilometres of slopes and 200 ski lifts, connecting the following ski resorts: Courchevel, Méribel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires. Les 3 Vallées has very reliable snow conditions and is a very popular destination for an early start to the ski season: Val Thorens is even the highest ski resort in Europe, reaching an altitude of up to 3,200 metres. The Isère region, which stretches from the foothills of the French Pre-Alps to the Écrins massif, is probably the most diverse ski region in France. The Écrins massif also offers a magnificent view of the high mountains of the Dauphiné Alps.

Even more fascinating is Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc (4,810 m), located in the Haute-Savoie region. This region is in the eastern part of France, right on the border with Italy and the Swiss cantons of Valais and Geneva. In the valley, majestic mountain landscapes meet unspoilt nature with scattered lakes and rivers. The famous winter sports resort of Chamonix, where the Winter Olympics were held in 1924, has everything nature lovers and winter sports fans could wish for. Here alone, you can choose from a variety of ski areas such as Chamonix, Les Portes du Soleil and La Clusaz. Les Portes du Soleil comprises a total of twelve connected ski resorts, offering a total of around 580 kilometres of slopes! As some of the ski resorts are located in Switzerland, crossing the border on skis has never been easier! Also worth mentioning is the unforgettable view that skiers and snowboarders can enjoy on sunny days.

Another interesting destination is the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m). This is where one of the longest and most spectacular high-alpine ski routes in the world begins. The route is around 20 km long and leads through the Vallée Blanche down to Chamonix.
However, Mont Blanc is not the only high mountain in France. There are equally majestic peaks in the Hautes-Alpes, for example: the southernmost 4,000-metre peak in the Alps, Barre des Écrins (4,102 m), or the mountains Le Meije (3,983 m) and Mont Pelvoux (3,946 m), both of which almost reach the 4,000 m mark. With all these mighty peaks to choose from and the abundance of different ski resorts, winter sports fans are guaranteed to find the perfect skiing holiday in France.

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

In southern France lies the département Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The region is especially well-known for it's wonderful landscape diversity. The impressive mix of deep canyons, massive mountain sides and mystic, rocky ridges makes the area the perfect destination for activity seekers. In winter holiday-goers will find charming ski villages with lots of hours of sunshine and pistes which stretch above 3,000 m altitude. Once of the largest ski areas of the southern Alps is the "Espace Lumière" with over 200 km of piste and two very family-friendly ski stations.

Haute-Savoie

Haute-Savoie

The département Haute-Savoie in the eastern part of France boarders on the Swiss cantons Valais and Geneva, as well as on the Italian Aosta Valley. Haute-Savoie is a region of superlatives as it is the possessor of a wonderful natural heritage. Europe's highest point, the Mont Blanc (4,810 m) lies here, as well as part of Lake Geneva, Lake Annecy, the river Rhône and Chamonix Valley. Winter sports fans can choose from an extensive selection of ski areas, including Chamonix, but also the areas Portes du Soleil and La Clusaz, which are world-famous.

Hautes-Alpes

Hautes-Alpes

The name says it all: France's highest mountains (apart from the Mont Blanc) are situated in the département Hautes-Alpes. The Barre des Ecrins (4,102 m) rises up high as the most southern 4,000 m-peak, surrounded by a number of similarly high mountains - including the Le Meije (3,983 m) and the Mont Pelvoux (3,946 m). Ideal conditions for diverse winter sports options, and therefore, the ski areas of Hautes-Alpes attract guests with both quality and quantity. The Massif de Dévoluy offers 100 km of pistes, La Forêt Blanche has 185 km to offer and in Serre Chevalier it is even 250 km. Lots of space to run riot - for beginners and pros alike!

Isère

Isère

A winter sports region can hardly be more diverse. This one reaches from the marginal mountain ranges of the French Pre-Alps to the Écrins Massif, the majestic high mountain scenery of the Dauphiné.

Maritime Alps

Maritime Alps

The Maritime Alps mean sea and high mountains in one breath. It is the distinctive contrast between deep blue sky and snowy winter landscape that creates the special attractiveness of the most southern winter sports area in the French Alps.

Savoie

Savoie

The large ski areas of La Plagne, Val Thorens, Tignes and Valmeinier are located in a semi-circle around the Vanoise Massif in the southern Savoie Alps. Although there are still some gaps between the ski areas, they will one day be joined to become the largest winter sports territory in the world.
