Ski area Via Lattea - Sestriere/Sauze d'Oulx/San Sicario/Claviere/Montgenèvre

With around 400 kilometres of piste and 70 lift systems, the Via Lattea ("Milky Way") is one of the largest interconnected ski areas in Italy. Sestriere lies at the centre of this extensive ski network, surrounded by other winter sports resorts such as Clavière, Sauze d'Oulx, Pragelato, Sansicario, Cesana and Montgenèvre in France. Thanks to its altitude of between 1,359 m and 2,789 m and the support of over 900 snow cannons, the area is particularly snow-sure.

The varied range of pistes appeals to all levels of skier - from children's areas and flat practice slopes to numerous blue pistes and sporty red and challenging black runs. Above Sestriere, the lifts lead up to Monte Motta (2,823 m) - the highest point in the ski area - with challenging descents and magnificent panoramic views over the high valley. In the lower areas, forest slopes lined with larches and conifers beckon.

The gondola lift from Sestriere takes you up to Mount Fraiteve (2,701 m), from where the longest descent in the ski area runs for 7 kilometres down to the Pariol middle station. Snowboarders and freestylers will also find the best conditions in the Via Lattea: The snowpark in Sestriere, the park in Montgenèvre and the "Double Black Park" at Rio Nero near Sauze d'Oulx with quarter-pipe, kicker and rails offer plenty of action.

Rules of conduct on ski pistes in Italy

To ensure safety on the ski slopes in Italy, stricter safety regulations have been in force since 2022. In order to use the ski areas, everyone must have liability insurance that covers damage to third parties. It will also be possible to take out this insurance on site for individual days. Drunken skiing is prohibited and punishable by heavy fines, with a maximum of 0.5 mg of alcohol per litre of blood. To reduce the risk of injury, helmets are also compulsory for all minors when skiing, snowboarding or tobogganing.

In a ski area as large as Via Lattea, there is of course no shortage of expansive fun areas. The ski area has a total of three snowparks, one each in Sestrière, Sauze d'Oulx and Sansicario. Beginners can also practise on easier obstacles in a separate beginner's area.

The "Double Black Park" is located at the Nuovo Basset chair lift above Sauze d'Oulx. This masterpiece of shaper art was designed for the 2006 Winter Olympics and still delights the boarder and freestyle scene today. The area is a terrain park equipped with a quarter-pipe, rails and kickers.

Finally, the Montgenèvre fun park is 500 metres long and offers a well-maintained area for jibbing and jumping. On the French side near Montgenèvre, ambitious riders can also let off steam on two bordercross trails.
