With almost 50,000 inhabitants, Dornbirn is the most populous city in Vorarlberg in Austria and is located just 13 kilometres from the southern shore of Lake Constance. The history of the town dates back to the Middle Ages, before Dornbirn developed into a textile centre in the 19th and 20th centuries. The town's historical landmark is the market square with the Red House, while its modern landmark is the impressive funicular railway, which takes thousands of visitors up to a viewing platform high above the town every year and offers a breathtaking view over the Rhine Valley. The Dornbirn City Museum and the Kunsthaus Dornbirn also offer exciting insights for those interested in culture, while the nearby Rappenlochschlucht nature reserve with its impressive hiking trails attracts nature lovers.

Lake Constance

The picturesque Lake Constance is for many a synonym for a perfect relaxing holiday. The lake is situated in the Alpine foreland and therefore right next to the enchanting mountain world. The largest part of its shore, however, is located on Bavarian grounds, surrounded by gentle alps. With 536 km², Lake Constance is the lake with the biggest surface in Germany, which consists of two lakes as well as a connecting river: Lake Obersee, Lake Untersee and the Seerhein. The entire Lake Constance region stretches across four countries: Germany, Austria and Switzerland have direct access to the lake and then there is the Principality of Liechtenstein. A definite bonus point of this holiday region around these gorgeous waters is its diversity. Attractive towns such as Bregenz, Constance, Lindau or Friedrichshafen invite for some sightseeing while several castles and fortresses remind of the old times and a series of museum, galeries and modern architecture keep the culture fan entertained. Its proximity to the mountains makes this the ideal location for skiing and snowboarding, winter hiking and tobogganing.
